September Lunch and Learn - Did you know there was a spring near Picacho Peak?

Ken Steigman will be speaking to us about a rare perennial spring near Picacho Mountain.  Unfortunately, the spring has been overgrazed, vandalized, and trashed over the years.  Ken will be speaking about the group of volunteers who have assisted in cleaning up the area and will present a slide show on the current status of the project.

Ken, who retired to Las Cruces in 2020, was formerly a Research Scientist and Restoration Ecologist at the University of North Texas, Institute of Applied Science.  Prior to his retirement, his focus was avian ecology on the prairies of North Texas, restoring and managing tall-grass prairies and managing wildlife populations.  Ken currently is a member of the leadership team of the Laas Cruces Chap0ter of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico, serving as Conservation Chair and assisting in planning programs and field trips for the group.  Ken also runs a federally and state licensed bird-banding station adjacent to his home near Picacho Mountain.
